Kitchen Remodel

We had been going back and forth for awhile now on weather or not to move but with the real estate market crashing it just wasn't feasible for us to do so.   Since the day we moved in, I had hated my kitchen cabinets.  So since we were having to stay my oh so sweet husband told me to make it into what I wanted.  This was music to my ears.  :)
I am the biggest do it yourselfer so my big plan was to paint the cabinets all by myself.  I had the whole thing figured out- What spray gun to use, how to make a "spray station" in the garage, working on it all hours of the night while the boys slept, etc. But, that was one thing my husband was not going to allow.  And let me tell you, am I sooooooo glad he didn't!  It took 2 people who worked non stop for 8 hours a day for 2 weeks. That's 160 hours - and they are professionals! With 2 small children, what was I ever thinking?!?! So, if you can hire a professional, I would say GO FOR IT! :) Now, let's take a look at my not so pretty kitchen...

We knew that we wanted to add some moulding to the cabinets to give them more of a custom cabinet feel.  My husband, Scot is super handy (boy did I luck out!) and was able to beef up our island and add the moulding himself...

And the posts on the corners are just fence posts from Home Depot.  They are very inexpensive and make such a big impact.

Next, it was time to choose the paint color.  I knew that I wanted the main cabinets to be white and the kitchen island to be french grey with a glaze.  I did not know however, how many white paints there were to choose from - over 25! Seriously, 25 whites!!! - This was one of the most hardest decisions of my life.  Ha, not really but pretty darn close! ;)

So, the search began for the perfect white.  I knew I did not want a stark white but a beautiful soft white that was not too yellow as some creamy whites can be.  I knew the painter was going to be using Sherwin Williams so I purchased a few colors that I thought would work and made sample boards ...

Scot had these boards left over from another project so I painted them and checked them out in all areas of the kitchen during different times of day, as the lighting changed.  After viewing them for days I decided the one on left was too grey, the one on the right was too bright and the one in the middle was too pink.  Ugh, back to the drawing board.

The paint was costly because they did not sell the sheen that would be used in the sample sizes.  I had not done that in previous experiences and let me tell you -  difference in sheen  can make a color look completely different so I knew I had to bite the bullet!  Especially with such a huge project. I knew once the painters had started I was stuck with the color.  So, I would highly recommend this and I also found out that just because one person says one white was perfect for their kitchen, DOES NOT mean it's perfect in yours!  Everyone's lighting is different so take the time and spend the extra doe to make sure you get your perfect white!

After another round of samples, I found it!!!

Sherwin Williams Origami - It's my perfect soft white!

We still have a long way to go but it amazes me how just paint can change the complete look of a room!

Stay tuned for the rest of our kitchen make over!
